Color Converter: HEX, RGB, HSL, Lab, CMYK
Enter a color as HEX or set RGB with the sliders and see it as HEX, RGB, HSL, Lab and a simple CMYK. The CMYK here is approximate, without a print profile.
the circle is the hue (H), the marker is your color
Approximate: for an exact color an ICC print profile is needed; the simple CMYK knows neither the paper nor the inks.
How it is calculated
HEX and RGB are the same thing written differently: three channels of 0–255. HSL is hue (0–360°), saturation and lightness in percent.
Lab: sRGB → linear RGB → XYZ → Lab. The D65 white point is for screens, D50 for print (with Bradford adaptation). L is lightness, a runs from green to red, b from blue to yellow.
Simple CMYK: K = 1 − max(R, G, B) ÷ 255; C = (1 − R′ − K) ÷ (1 − K), the same for M and Y (R′ = R ÷ 255). An approximation without a profile.
K = 1 − max(R, G, B) / 255 C = (1 − R′ − K) / (1 − K) Lab: sRGB → XYZ → Lab (D65 or D50)
Worked example
#FF0000 → RGB 255, 0, 0 → HSL 0°, 100%, 50%.
Lab (D65) = 53.24; 80.09; 67.20. The simple CMYK = 0 / 100 / 100 / 0.
An estimate: colors on a screen depend on the monitor. The CMYK is approximate; for print use your printer's profile.
