Color Palettes: Harmonies
Colors that go with a base color: complementary, analogous, triad, split-complementary and tetrad. A hue shift on the HSL wheel.
the dots are the harmony colors, the lines join them on the wheel
How it is calculated
The color is turned into HSL and the hue H is shifted by fixed angles, while saturation and lightness stay.
Complementary +180°; analogous ±30°; triad +120° and +240°; split-complementary +150° and +210°; tetrad +90°, +180° and +270°.
H' = (H + angle) mod 360 S and L unchanged
Worked example
#3366CC → HSL (220°, 60%, 50%). Complementary: H = 220° + 180° = 400° → 40°, which is HSL (40°, 60%, 50%) = #CC9933.
An estimate: an HSL harmony is a starting point, not a rule; colors on a screen depend on the monitor.
