Repeat, Gear Teeth and Cylinder
Convert between the repeat (print length around the cylinder), the number of gear teeth and the bare-metal cylinder diameter. Enter what you know, plus the plate and tape thickness.
- gear (tooth pitch 3.175 mm)
- repeat P: the circle unrolled into a line
- cylinder section: metal, tape, plate (thickness exaggerated)
Teeth
92
Repeat P
292.10 mm
Cylinder diameter D
89.70 mm
bare metal, without plate and tape
How it is calculated
The gear pitch is 3.175 mm (1/8 inch): repeat P = teeth × 3.175, and teeth = P ÷ 3.175.
The printing face sits above the metal by the plate and tape thickness on each side, so the bare-metal diameter D = P ÷ π − 2 × (plate + tape).
P = teeth · 3.175 teeth = P / 3.175 D = P / π − 2 · (plate + tape)
Worked example
92 teeth: P = 92 × 3.175 = 292.1 mm.
Plate 1.14 mm and tape 0.5 mm: D = 292.1 ÷ π − 2 × (1.14 + 0.5) = 92.98 − 3.28 = 89.70 mm.
